What will happen at the end of the twelve-month trial period?

Over twelve months, the Shire will monitor the use of the site and in consultation with stakeholders and the community, including Brookfield residents, will determine at the end of the trial whether management of the site as a mountain bike skills area should continue at this location.

How will the increased number of people using the reserve be managed?

The mountain bike skills area is intended for use by the local community, predominantly children; it is not planned to promote or advertise the site widely as a tourism destination.

The marking out of the formal trails will help to prevent further expansion of trails into the remaining vegetation. Plans to revegetate with native species will help to improve the quality and resilience of the natural bushland to deal with visitation.

Increased reserve inspections and maintenance visits by Shire Officers will help monitor the level of use and identify whether any additional actions are needed.

    What about parking?

The intention is to provide a mountain bike skills area for the local community; it is not anticipated to be a significant change in parking demands. Trail users are encouraged to continue travelling to the site by bike. If required, parking is available along the reserve verge on Bottlebrush Drive. The Shire will monitor parking over the 12-month trial period.

How will community health and safety issues be managed?

Local youth will be involved in the establishment and maintenance of the trails, hosted by Shire contractor, Magic Dirt Trailworx. The collaboration aims to help encourage a sense of ownership of the trails, encouraging users to demonstrate respect, safety and sustainable trail use.

Onsite practical workshops and dig days will be run in partnership with professional trail builders to provide skills in trail building and foster appropriate behaviours and use of trails. There will also be opportunities for local youth to be involved in the development of a ‘Code of Conduct’ and signage for the reserve and trails area.

Any non-urgent concerns about the environment or community health and safety can be reported to the Shire at 9780 5255 or amrshire@amrshire.wa.gov.au, or after hours at 9780 5695

Will we still be able to build trails in this reserve?

Yes. The community is invited to be involved in the building of the sanctioned trail area and attend practical workshops, planting days and community ‘dig days’ in 2023, in partnership with professional trail builders. On-going trail building in the rehabilitated bushland, will not be permitted.
