The purpose of Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaption Planning (CHRMAP) is to provide strategic guidance for areas potentially exposed to coastal processes, specifically sea level rise and storm erosion.

The plan focuses on seven study areas: Gracetown, Prevelly, Gnarabup, Hamelin Bay, Molloy Island, Augusta North, and Augusta South. It follows the process outlined in the State Coastal Planning Policy of risk identification, risk analysis, and risk evaluation.

A series of maps have been prepared for each location, and the following risk categories developed:

  • Low coastal exposure (potential exposure to coastal processes in 20–100 years)
  • Medium coastal exposure (potential exposure to coastal processes in 10–20 years)
  • High coastal exposure (potential exposure to coastal processes in 0–10 years)

These are based on things like rate of erosion, factor of safety, and sea level rise. The risk zones are not a representation of where the ocean will actually be over a period of time but allow planning to factor in potential for increased risk in these areas.

The CHRMAP recommends responses to future coastal management. For Augusta South this initially involves annual monitoring to determine whether there are any changes along the coastline. If areas are seen to continuously erode and reach trigger points, then several options can be recommended.

Our coastal areas are highly appreciated for their natural beauty, cultural, recreational and economic values. The CHRMAP will develop appropriate responses to coastal management based on community expectations, technical expertise, resources, environmental impacts and collaboration with coastal managers.

Community Information Sessions

We are running a series of Community Information Sessions for residents who may be impacted by South Augusta CHRMAP.

The sessions will be run in person at The Shire of Augusta Margaret River Augusta Office on Wednesday 1 April 2026.

The proposed sessions aim to:

  • Engage directly with coastal residents to discuss coastal management strategies.
  • Provide information regarding South Augusta CHRMAP.

RSVPs close 12pm Wednesday 25 March 2026
