Everyone should be able to access and enjoy our beautiful beaches
We’re trialling beach access matting at Gracetown Swimmers Beach to make it easier for people with disabilities, older adults, and families with prams to get onto the sand.
The trial runs from 18 December 2025 to 23 February 2026, following an extension from the original end date of 2 February 2026 due to positive feedback. During this time, we’ll monitor how it works and collect feedback.
Informed by people living with disability and advocates, the Access and Inclusion Plan 2023–2027 identified beach access as the number one priority.
An independent accessibility analysis (2024) recommended Gracetown Swimmers Beach due to its gradient, proximity to parking, shade and toilets.
The Mobi‑Mat® provides a firm, safe, cool and stable surface across sand.
Forty metres of matting has been installed, with thirty metres being provided by Enable WA.
The trial is made possible thanks to Enable WA, who have loaned 30 metres of matting from their accessible events trailer.
To help make this work, please:
- Keep the matting clear of umbrellas and gear
- Keep parking space available for people with disabilities and lower mobility.
- Report any issues (loose pegs or sand build-up) to amrshire@amrshire.wa.gov.au or call 9780 5667
Please note:
The beach matting is subject to coastal conditions and human movement, which can affect usability. Please be aware that not all wheelchairs or mobility devices may be compatible with the beach matting. Please let us know if you have any feedback on your experience using the matting.
