We have now finalised our Local Biodiversity Strategy. The Strategy identifies and prioritises key environmental assets for protection and includes a Local Biodiversity Action Plan. It was developed to strengthen community engagement, advocacy and partnership opportunities, and to foster a culture of stewardship towards the natural environment

Biodiversity, the diversity of life on earth, is critical to our region as it drives the ecosystem services that support our quality of life.

Protecting local biodiversity in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River is recognised as crucial due to its unique ecological and cultural significance.

The Shire delivers a range of essential services to the community, from infrastructure (roads, parks, waste management) and planning and development to community services.

This Strategy guides how the Shire worked to protect biodiversity, support ecological health, cultural values and climate resilience while delivering these services.

To help manage key threats to biodiversity – both current and emerging – the Strategy outlined an action plan for Shire staff and set out how we continued to work collaboratively with our community and partners.

The Strategy:
  • Identified and prioritised environmental assets for protection
  • Mapped natural areas within the Shire, including key habitat linkages and corridors
  • Integrated biodiversity considerations into all areas of Shire business and decision‑making
  • Strengthened collaboration with stakeholders and the community
  • Included actions to support private landholders in protecting natural areas
  • Recognised the importance of the region as part of the International Southwest Biodiversity Hotspot and the Busselton to Augusta National Biodiversity Hotspot
  • Incorporated a Local Biodiversity Action Plan to guide priorities and decision‑making over a 10‑year period

The Strategy was drafted and the community was invited to review it and provide feedback.

A series of frequently asked questions was also provided to support community understanding before completing the survey.
