Why has the length of the contest been extended?

31 days has been allocated for the event which includes set up, pack down and competition days, which has not changed from the last approval.

The event competition window is 11 days. The competition usually runs for 4-6 days (weather dependent).

The allocated timeframe allows the event site to be built safely and takes into account any unfavourable weather conditions.

Will there be public access to the foreshore?

Pedestrian access to the beaches, foreshore and recreational areas is to remain open throughout the event, other than during the 4 – 6 competition days where a dedicated route for the athletes to move between the athlete area and the competition zone is required

Surfers Point is to remain open to surfers on non-event days and Southsides remains open for the duration of the event.  River Mouth remains open for the event.

What will happen if the Easter weekend falls within the event set up?

When the Easter weekend falls within the setup time, event organisers are requesting an additional four days.  These four days will allow organisers to cease all building activities on site and reopen Surfers Point to the public. Only the event areas north of the grassed area will be fenced off. Remaining areas of Surfers Point, including the access road to the River Mouth and public footpaths will be open for public use.

How will the WSL manage their impact to North Point?

WSL is required to run the event in such a manner that minimises any impact to the environment.  Before and after site inspections will be undertaken by both Shire staff and DBCA to ensure WSL returns the sites to their original condition.  If the sites are not returned to the satisfaction of the Shire and DBCA, WSL will be required to undertake the necessary rehabilitation measures.

North Point will only be used as a back up option if weather conditions meant the Pro could not run at Main Break or The Box. The WSL will be required to demonstrate a need to use North Point and receive Shire approval before the event can go ahead.

The Box and Northpoint are considered broadcast events with limited access for spectators. Spectators would be encouraged to watch the event online. If the event is moved to North Point, capacity of the beach area is limited to 400 spectators.  An approved bunting and fencing plan will be implemented to protect sensitive areas. Marshals will also be located in sensitive areas to provide direction.

Infrastructure will be minimal and used for competition purposes, which includes judges, camera platforms, broadcast, and limited operational spaces.

Public access to the headland and northern car park will be restricted during the event. Public access to Town Beach and the boat ramp will remain open.

Why will there be a licenced area?

A smaller licensed area at Surfers Point was introduced at the 2017 event.  In 2023, approval was granted for a larger licensed area, which is the same as what is being proposed for 2024-2028. The licenced area will assist local police manage spectator drinking on site. The public can access the licensed area until 11am each day of the event.
