Full steam ahead for skate park upgrade

The kick-start meeting to progress detailed design and construction of the Margaret River Youth Precinct was held between officers from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and skate park contractor Convic this week.

The meeting followed last week’s formal acceptance of the contract by Convic, who won a competitive tendering process to complete the upgrade works.

Shire Human and Community Services Manager Nigel Anderson said he was confident Convic would deliver an outstanding project for both community members and visitors to enjoy.

“The first iteration of the Margaret River skate park was constructed by Convic in 1997 as their inaugural project,” he said.

“It was executed beautifully at the time and quickly became a much-loved and well-used community facility.

“We aim to further expand and improve the park which has held up well beyond its projected lifespan.

“It’s great to have Convic back on board, now with 20 years experience, a host of great ideas and passionate staff to pull off the project.”

Convic Design Manager Jason Geralis said he was excite to return to birthplace of the company and the site of our first skate park.

“The Margaret River Skate Park was the catalyst for the growth of youth facilities across the state.

“There has been an evolution of modern youth and skate culture across Australia since then, but even now the Margaret River Skate Park remains relevant and still represents the unique skate identity of the region.

“CONVIC are proud to have contributed to this legacy and even more proud that we will now contribute to this important next phase in the development of the youth space upon its 20 year anniversary.”

Mr Geralis said he Convic staff looked forward to delivering a community facility to suit a wide range of demographics.

“We look forward to delivering not only a skate park, but a youth space, which promises to be all-action, all-abilities and all-inclusive,” he said.

Upgrades to the Youth Precinct due for completion in mid-2018 include skate park improvements, new skate facilities, parkour equipment, barbeques, seating, shade, landscaping and pathways.

The Shire has applied for additional grant funds to construct Zone Room spill out area shade structures, various provisional play equipment, individual skate features and landscaping elements.
