Consultation has concluded

The Margaret River Youth Precinct is undergoing a major redevelopment with over $2 million dollars of improvements planned for the site. This major transformation will see an expansion of skate, scooter and BMX facilities within the park as well as the addition of a new raised stage area for music events, parkour and play equipment, BBQ areas, shade, landscaping, spectator seating, public toilets and much more.

Thanks to Margaret River Lions, Lotterywest, community contributions and the Shire of Augusta Margaret River for making it possible to bring nationally acclaimed facilities to our region.

It’s thanks to Lotterywest retailers like the Margaret River Newsagency and Augusta Newsagency that we’re able to make this happen!

You can view the preliminary design plans on the Shire website and in the documents section. Take a 3D tour of the new park design, showing stage 1 and stage 2 of the works: https://www.kubity.com/p/oO4Dx1

The kick-start meeting to progress detailed design and construction of the Margaret River Youth Precinct was held between officers from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and skate park contractor Convic this week.

The meeting followed last week’s formal acceptance of the contract by Convic, who won a competitive tendering process to complete the upgrade works.

Shire Human and Community Services Manager Nigel Anderson said he was confident Convic would deliver an outstanding project for both community members and visitors to enjoy.

“The first iteration of the Margaret River skate park was constructed by Convic in 1997 as their inaugural project,” he said.

“It was executed beautifully at the time and quickly became a much-loved and well-used community facility.

“We aim to further expand and improve the park which has held up well beyond its projected lifespan.

“It’s great to have Convic back on board, now with 20 years experience, a host of great ideas and passionate staff to pull off the project.”

Convic Design Manager Jason Geralis said he was excite to return to birthplace of the company and the site of our first skate park.

“The Margaret River Skate Park was the catalyst for the growth of youth facilities across the state.

“There has been an evolution of modern youth and skate culture across Australia since then, but even now the Margaret River Skate Park remains relevant and still represents the unique skate identity of the region.

“CONVIC are proud to have contributed to this legacy and even more proud that we will now contribute to this important next phase in the development of the youth space upon its 20 year anniversary.”

Mr Geralis said he Convic staff looked forward to delivering a community facility to suit a wide range of demographics.

“We look forward to delivering not only a skate park, but a youth space, which promises to be all-action, all-abilities and all-inclusive,” he said.

Upgrades to the Youth Precinct due for completion in mid-2018 include skate park improvements, new skate facilities, parkour equipment, barbeques, seating, shade, landscaping and pathways.

The Shire has applied for additional grant funds to construct Zone Room spill out area shade structures, various provisional play equipment, individual skate features and landscaping elements.

Community members can help fund additional park upgrades donating to gofundme.com/margaret-river-skatepark.

The first tangible steps towards the redevelopment of the Margaret River Youth Precinct are well underway with the creation of a new public amenities block starting on Monday 30 January 2017.

These works are expected to be completed by late April - early May 2017 and will service the Youth Precinct as well as sporting events at the oval.

The new facilities will see the replacement of existing amenities at the Scout Hall and will increase the sanitary facilities from one cubicle to six.

The toilet block is designed to meet disability access standards in line with the Building Code of Australia, with further consideration given to safety and usability.

Shire President Ian Earl said the upgrade of these facilities will benefit existing park users as well as serve as the first step towards the redevelopment of the Margaret River Youth Precinct.

“This is the first exciting step in seeing our youth facilities upgraded following the announcement of significant State funding for the project.”

Major works to upgrade the skate park and other facilities in the precinct are due to start in mid – late 2017.

A proportion of the area will be fenced off to allow this work to occur.

  • If you want the deepest bowl in WA

You may have noticed a bit of surveying going on at the skate park of late and wondered why there are now small test sites located throughout the park? Well… the Shire is having geotechnical data produced to test soil composition and the depth of the water table to help determine what this site will allow, with the big question being - can we sink the new bowl 3m into the ground!!

This is a really important investigation and the test sites will remain active for 7 weeks to enable a well-researched evaluation of the site.

Please look after these test sites and inform fellow users of what they are for.
