Smoke Free Main Street

Consultation has concluded

We'd like to hear from local business owners in Margaret River if they support the idea of a Smoke Free Main Street in Margret River. Please take a few moments to complete our short survey below.

At a Council meeting in February 2016, Council requested consultation with local businesses and the Margaret River Chamber of Commerce regarding the creation of a smoke free zone along the main street in Margaret River.

How it would look...

The smoke free zone is currently proposed to be along the footpaths of Bussell Highway from Reuther Park to Higgins Street. The objective is to promote a clean, green and healthy image for Margaret River and to protect business owners along the main street from the harmful effects of passive smoking.

The zone will not be enforced by the creation of a local law, instead smokers are encouraged to refrain from smoking by strategic signage and positive reinforcement of the smoke free message (an example is shown in the photos to the right). Options include placing stickers on bins, removing some of the butt bins along the footpaths, and providing ‘kits’ to main street businesses to assist with implementation.
