Our Place 2040
The Strategic Community Plan 2040 was endorsed by Council on Wednesday 22 September 2021.
Background
The Shire has completed a major review of its long term strategic focus. The Shire is required to do this every four years, which was previously completed in 2016 with “Your Vision 2036”. A review of the document started in September 2021 and included:
- A community survey from October to February 2021, online and in hardcopy with more than 900 pieces of feedback received.
- Six place workshops held across the Shire in November 2020, view the workshop records here.
- Three place workshops held in specific places in May 2021.
- The Family Dinner Project over May 2021, and
- Other focused engagement

about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded.- What's important to you about the Augusta Margaret River area?
- What do you value in your community – for our economy, environment, place and culture?
- What can the Shire do to uphold these values?
- In what way does the Shire touch your life and what do you value about that?
- What is it about Augusta Margaret River that makes you want to call it home?
- What do you like about our public facilities, including open spaces, parks, libraries, swimming pools and market places?
Skitreesover 3 years agoRegister and restrict domestic cats movement in our region to protect our precious wildlife.
When are we going to get serious about protecting our local native wildlife from roaming domestic cats. Cats are killing an estimated 230m native Australian birds, reptiles and mammals every year, according to new research that quantifies the pet's national toll on native animals for the first time. Our council needs to take on the responsibility for our threatened wildlife and develop policies that will protect them and ensure they have a future. The council needs to put some serious thought into this policy to ensure that all cats are registered and that their movement is restricted to their home. Why wait until it's too late?

Shire maintenance and enhancement of these areas has definitely improved over the last few years. It's lovely to see new generations using these spaces that are so much a part of our community.
0 comment1Tim Cawleyabout 3 years agoProvide better access to sections of the coast to open it up to all not just cape to cape walkers. Upgrade current tracks to proper roads.

0 comment0karenover 3 years agoSupport proposals that promote conservation, respect, enjoyment, community and visitor stewardship of our environment eg Geopark, Karri Bowl
The community consistently expresses that they love our environment. Protecting environmental values will require: * strong planning (eg I support Hamlet development and other initiatives in the draft Planning Strategy), * coordinated action across sectors eg Wooditjup Bilya, Giant Light Steps Stewardship Alliance, climate action, whole-of-landscape planning (corridors, refugia, forest protection, coastal zone protection), regenerative agriculture, improved fire management, *community action, *visitor/tourist respect and engagement in ecotourism. Several current proposals eg Karri Bowl, Unbeaten Tracks, Geopark, ecotourism accreditation, will promote community and visitor enjoyment, understanding, respect and care. The Shire can play a role in supporting these initiatives and community activities eg restoration. Giant Light Steps has yet to reach its full potential in bringing together collaborative stewardship - this is an opportunity for greater focus.

samanthaover 3 years agoStop using Weed Killing poisons
In the future We WILL see the natural environment flourish and when the shire stop using the poisons for lazy weed control, nature will not only look better but there will be more of a balanced ecological system. You will stop looking at the propaganda lobbying and start doing serious research! We will remove the poisons from AMR shire and beyond ! ! Be brave, say no to puppet master BAYER and MONEYSANTO !!
0 comment0Cow Bombieabout 3 years agoBetter dog control
Get tougher on dog owners who don't follow the rules (e.g.keeping dogs on leads on shire paths/trails, picking up poo). Close all beaches to dogs other than those already designated as dog exercise areas i.e. Prevelly, Jay's Beach south, Gracetown dog beach.
0 comment0haywardtomover 3 years agoPreserve the Rural, natural feel to the area.
Small town hubs, eg. Parkwater lots people don't know exist as it's hidden from the main areas. But don't clear bush to build them. Plant/screen areas.
1 comment2BenWarnerover 3 years agoBy-pass around Cowaramup
Construct a bypass around Cowaramup but have it designed in a way so tourists will still visit local businesses

about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded.- What could be improved about where you live?
- What do you see the Shire doing to support your needs?
- What priorities do you want the Shire to focus on?
- Where do you want to see development? What area should be more extensively development and what does it look like?
- Can you see yourself living in Augusta Margaret River in 10 years? Why/why not?
Cow Bombieabout 3 years agoPut a cap on the amount of short stay accommodation and limit the number of granny flats.
Our residential areas are becoming increasingly dense, the footprint of buildings are expanding as more and more build ancillary dwellings. This results in the loss of trees and gardens and the habitat they provide for wildlife. Whole house short stay accommodation disrupts our communities with noise.
0 comment0Jbandover 3 years agoProvide or at least help support a Senior Citizens Centre for use by retired people and their Clubs.
We currently use the Margaret River District Club for bridge, games day and socialisation, but this venue is struggling and in danger of closing. There are no similar venues available, and this venue is ideal to cater for the needs of seniors in our community. i.e. games room hire, meals available, bar service in the evenings and room to store our equipment.
0 comment0TAPover 3 years agoHave cinema on the weekends at HEART and more G rated movies in school holidays
... because not everyone wants to go to the movies mid-week.
0 comment0haywardtomover 3 years agoEncourage Trees in Subdivisions (possibly slightly bigger blocks)
Encourage tree plantings and vegetation in subdivisions to increase the cooling affect in streets (with slightly bigger blocks). Reduce energy use and water consumption by households. This also allows a more natural feel to areas and a less city like feel. Enforce quality buildings, with a suitable design feel.
1 comment2Mover 3 years agoSeparate categories of planning approval for commercial use that might be contentious
Before land is even purchased, developers of service stations, fast food franchises etc. need to know planning conditions will be more stringent than other commercial enterprises. Much more weight given to environment, aesthetics and views of local residents.
