To ensure our community and region can adapt and thrive in a changing climate, the Shire is developing its first Climate Adaptation Plan.
We previously sought input from the community - across industry, business and households to better understand the risks we all face in a changing climate, and the actions we can take to build our climate resilience now and into the future.
This Climate Adaptation Plan complements the Shire’s existing Climate Action Plan Part 1: Towards Zero Emissions which focuses on mitigation - actions we are taking to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, like putting renewable energy on our buildings and increasing urban greening.
Because the climate is already changing and we expect to experience more extreme weather events in the future, we need to start thinking about ways to eliminate, reduce or adapt to these changes now.
The good news is, that doing so also brings enormous co-benefits - like the fact that planting more trees and increasing urban greening not only draws down carbon from the atmosphere but also protects and cools us in a warming climate and creates more liveable, healthy public spaces for us all to enjoy.
Our Climate Adaption Plan will:
Identify key climate risks to our community and environment
Determine how the Shire can support the community to adapt to a changing climate
Identify opportunities to collaborate with community groups / organisations to build resilience to climate change
Workshops:
We previously hosted a series of workshops around the region in March and invited anyone to attend.
Witchcliffe - Thursday 14 March - 5pm-7pm - Druids Hall
Augusta - Friday 15 March - 10am-12pm – Augusta Council Chambers
Margaret River – Saturday 16 March - 10am-12pm - Margaret River Council Chambers
All venues are wheelchair accessible.
A free childcare service is available for the Saturday workshop.

Contributions to this consultation are closed for evaluation and review. A Draft Plan will be developed based on community feedback received during the consultation period.
Final Plan Presented to Council for Endorsement

A final document will be developed incorporating community feedback on the Draft Plan. The Climate Adaptation Plan will then be presented to Council for determination.
