We’re asking the community if they are supportive, or not, of plans to restore the Turner Street Jetty at an estimated cost of $660,000.

Please complete the survey at the bottom of this page. Consultation will close on Monday 10 November.

Background

On Wednesday 19 March 2025, the Turner St Jetty was closed to members of the public to ensure public safety and following expert engineering advice. Our community and visitors alike were understandably frustrated, surprised and saddened by the closure of this important and much-loved asset.

To resolve the closure as soon as possible, the Shire made the Turner Street Jetty urgent business at the Wednesday 26 March 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting in Augusta. At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday 26 March 2025 it was decided that Council:

1. Notes the intent to concurrently investigate two primary options for the future of the Turner Street Jetty, being renewal of failed components of the existing structure or alternatively, replacement of the existing structure.

2. Notes that in consultation with a dedicated community reference group, the two options of significant renewal or replacement will be explored with the community prior to procurement of the preferred option.

3. Endorses an amendment to the 2024-25 Annual Budget allowing for design and costing of options to renew or replace the Turner Street Jetty, with funding of up to $100,000 being made available for these works from the Asset Renewal Reserve.

Since then, we have investigated the feasibility of several options and formed a Turner Street Jetty Community Reference Group with 20 community participants.

The priorities the group identified included:

  • Reusing and retaining the aesthetic timber surface of the jetty
  • Provide safe and stage access for children and elderly members of the public
  • Prioritising use of the jetty for pedestrians, but not excluding berthing for small vessels
  • Ensuring that reconstruction was done prioritising ease of maintenance and a long design life

The group reviewed several options for the Turner Street Jetty, including repairing the existing structure, replacing it with a fixed or floating jetty, or removing it entirely.

Feedback from the group was clear and overwhelmingly in favour of a like-for-like restoration of the fixed timber decked jetty structure.

While the proposed rebuild is supported in principle, the estimated cost of $660,000 is a significant investment.

We will continue to progress with detailed design however, we are asking for community feedback to make sure that this choice reflects everyone’s priorities.

This was a decision of Council at the 23 July 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Thank you to the Community Reference Group for your time, effort and passion so far - it is greatly appreciated.
